What Is A Warm Roof Construction

GRP Warm Roof Orangery cornwall, Orangery Plymouth, Orangery Devon

Hard Wearing Guaranteed For 25 Years

Warm Deck Construction – Insulation is placed on top of the rafters/joists and the roof covering is then placed over the insulation. No ventilation is required for these types of roofs.

Cold Deck – Insulation is placed between the joists/rafters or in between the ceiling joists in the case of a pitched roof. Ventilation is required for these roofs.

To ensure our GRP roofs last we use the market-leading materials from Crystic Roof,  is an in-situ cold-applied advanced roofing system made from glass reinforced polyester, otherwise known as fibreglass. The Crystic Roof GRP roofing system is made exclusively by Scott Barda which is used by professionals all over the country because of its easy application and hard-wearing properties. Because the GRP fibreglass roof is a cold installation there is no fire risk, a GRP roof is the perfect replacement for tired old felt roofs.

When constructing new flat roofs it’s becoming ever more popular to construct warm roofs which could save you money on your heating bills. Homeowners will need to abide by building regulations, failing to do so could affect the sale of your house when the time comes to sell your home.

When replacing half of the flat roof’s waterproof layer it is classed as a refurbishment. Part L of the Building Regs states that when refurbishing a flat roof the thermal efficiency must meet the latest regulated standard if it doesn’t meet the minimum thermal standards. If your existing flat roof insulation is below the minimum requirements it must be upgraded. If you are simply repairing a flat roof with a new overlayed waterproof layer then this requirement does not apply.

Certain factors automatically trigger part L of the building regulations document:

1. Removal of an older covering on a flat roof will automatically trigger part L of the building regulations document.

2. Poor insulation in an existing flat roof will trigger part L of the building regulations document.

3. Domestic rebuilds must comply with part L of the building regulations document.

Part L1A pertains to the conservation of fuel and power in new dwellings to ensure buildings are constructed to provide maximum energy efficiency, this also includes modifying existing builds. You can find a link to the full building regulations document here.

  •  Long Lifespan

  • Bespoke builds
  • Harwearing
  • Thermally Efficient

The insulation within a GRP Warm Roof is layered above the structural construction and requires no ventilation.

During the year, the roof deck and everything below maintains a constant temperature which is close to that inside the building, protecting the roof structure from extremes of hot and cold which in turn reduces the potential for stress and damage caused by expansion and construction.

A GRP warm roof prevents the build-up of condensation because the structure is kept consistently warm at a temperature which is above dewpoint, by the insulation which is above the warm deck.

Condensation occurs when warm air laden with moisture meets a cold surface because a GRP warm roof maintains a consistent temperature the room below will not have a cold surface on which to condense. This type of flat roof is now considered as the standard form of construction on all new builds.
